Coast pushing hard for Games
QUEENLSAND Premier Anna Bligh thinks the Gold Coast is in with a strong chance to win the bid for the Commonwealth Games, but has warned there is still a long way to go.
Ms Bligh said another party of delegates will make their way to the Gold Coast in the coming months in order to make an informed decision regarding the games.
“I think we've got to fight for it and we have to take it very seriously,” Ms Bligh said.
“One of the reasons I thought we should bid for it is because I don't think we should ever take our eye off the events that lure people here and show them something of the magic of the Gold Coast.
“If we are successful, this will be the only international sporting event hosted by Australia in the next decade – and it will be in your backyard.”
Ms Bligh said the first round of Commonwealth Games delegates were impressed with what the Gold Coast had to offer.
“So we have already had the first round of voting delegates here and I cannot think of a better weekend,” Ms Bligh said.
“They were here for the marathon and they saw us organising a massive international event. They were very impressed and the Gold Coast put its best foot forward.”
Ms Bligh said Gold Coast residents should not become complacent about the possibility of hosting the games.
“There might have been a bit of an attitude that this is going to be easy for us, but it's not the case,” she said.
“Having said that, I really think the federation has to make a decision about what kind of games they want.
“I cannot think of a better word than we'll put the ‘sizzle' in the Commonwealth Games, and I think that is a very attractive part of our bid.”
