City laneways fill with vibrant art

ARTWORK for this Sunday's The Lanes Mackay Easter Festival is almost finished, despite some weather setbacks.

Rain may have delayed some of the artwork currently being created in Mackay's Fifth Lane, but it hasn't dampened artists' spirits.

The festival's band and visual arts co-ordinator Autumn Skuthorpe said people aged 4-65 had been involved in the project.

Part of the Fifth Lane "canvas" has been left blank to welcome graffiti by anonymous artists, an opportunity at least one person has taken advantage of.

"We only have one rule," Ms Skuthorpe said, "Don't paint over other people's work.

Fifth Lane is coming alive with an Alice in Wonderland theme and will be home for The Cube stage on Easter Sunday.

Lanes in Mackay's CBD have been painted with graffiti - but the good kind.

"This is graffiti, it doesn't have to be seen as vandalism, it can be creative," Mackay Regional Council's festival and events producer David Gerrand said.

He said the festival's artwork and live music was about bringing people back to reclaim the CBD.

Festival, events and the arts portfolio councillor Chris Bonanno said the event would showcase all of Mackay's artistic and musical talent.
