Iconic church to open for tours

THE grandest of Ipswich's iconic churches, St Mary's, will be open for tours on Sunday, May 6, to give visitors an insight into its history and magnificence.

Built of Helidon sandstone, the central city church on Elizabeth St was completed in 1904.

Its interior was recently refurbished, with both the stained glass windows and life-size Stations of the Cross now cleaned and restored.

St Mary's Parish Historical Society secretary Michelle Wood said the current building was the third church on the site.

"I just think it's beautiful, like a European-style cathedral," she said. "It has an atmosphere and is very quiet."

The tours will run from noon to 4pm as part of the Queensland Heritage Festival.
