City goes Grey crazy
BUNDABERG may experience a baby boom early next year, thanks to a man by the name of Christian Grey.
Although Mr Grey doesn't live in the rum city, his story has been enjoyed across thousands of Bundy households through the book series Fifty Shades of Grey, written by British author EL James.
Known among its readers as just Fifty Shades, the series has gained its popularity due to the novels' highly passionate love-making scenes, which have been spicing up sex lives in bedrooms across the world since the books were released in May this year.
One avid reader, Michelle DeSilva, posted on the NewsMail's Facebook page that the book had spiced up her love life.
"It actually made me feel more confident," she said.
Totally Adult manager Julie Sparey said the Fifty Shades phenomenon was bringing out the inner Anastasia Steele - the main female character - in Bundy women aged anywhere from 20 to 60.
"The silver balls have been selling out and males have come in under direction, looking at the highlighted parts (of the book) the wives had made," she said.
Dymocks bookshop owner Phil Freeman said the Fifty Shades of Grey three-book series had so far outsold the amount of copies of previous bestsellers, such as the Da Vinci Code, which were sold in the same time period.
"It's been hard to keep up with stock, especially when it first came out," he said.
"We have sold over 2000 copies at our store, with 80% of purchases from women and 20% from men."
The waiting list at the library is also growing, with 43 readers hoping to get their hands on the little book of bedroom secrets soon.
"Everyone wants to see what the fuss is about," library information services manager Peta Browne said.
