Church repaired eight months after cyclone tore roof off

MORE than eight months of reconstruction work and $60,000 has brought new life to the Mount Larcom Anglican Church.

The church, which has been in the area for more than 100 years, was severely damaged by Cyclone Marcia in mid-January this year.

The roof was torn off and the whole interior was damaged.

Director of the Parish of Gladstone Father Daniels said he saw the damage the day after the worst of the cyclone rolled through, when he visited all five of the churches in his parish.

"The roof was completely blown off, it was gone completely," he said.

"It was very upsetting."

"I was very sad about it because I didn't know what to do next; I didn't know if we could rebuild it."

They were covered by insurance, and the reconstruction work was worth $60,000.

While works continued a monthly worship would be held at the front by the trees.

Now they can host weddings, baptisms and funerals again.

On Friday night members of the Anglican Church gathered for a celebration of the new church and Father's Day.

"We had a wedding in January before the cyclone. The couple who was married came on Friday night too.

"It's like a new life for the church."

The church was fully decorated and they had music and a barbecue.
