FOR Meryl Chard, the old-time dances are not just about getting up on your feet for a boogie.

It's about making lifelong friends on the dance floor and taking them into everyday life.

The annual Christmas in July dance at St Ruth is perfect evidence of that.

"We have good dancing and it's a good night out,” Ms Chard said.

"We have lovely friends and good companionships and good camaraderie. It's just a good night out.”

Not only will the night be rife with good music and some nifty dance moves, but some added bonuses are hoped to keep the crowds coming.

A Christmas-themed supper will be ready on arrival, as well as plenty of Christmas cheer to go around.

"If you come dressed in a Christmas outfit, there's a prize for the best-dressed man and woman,” Ms Chard said.

"We have a lucky door prize and a raffle.

"The raffle is going to be a Christmas tree made out of horseshoes.

"The lady that does the supper makes sure everything is home cooked.”

One of the highlights of the dance were the costumes on show, Ms Chard said.

"We've had a leprechaun, we've had a lady with a Christmas apron and hats, and we've had a guy wrapped up in a white sheet and sandals bearing gifts.

"There's quite a few different ones.”

Ms Chard believes the dances have more than one benefit for those who attend.

"It's good exercise, they say it stops dementia,” she said.

"The people that go are a really nice bunch of people. Everyone gets along and good friendships are developed by going to dances.

"We've made some really nice friendships with lots of people.”

For people who have never been to an old-time dance, Ms Chard encourages anyone and everyone to give it a chance.

"Come along, enjoy yourself,” Ms Chard said.

"Put a bit of tinsel on your dress or a Santa hat. You never know, you might win a prize.

"Just enjoy the good times that we have and meet lots of new people.”

The dance begins at 8pm at the St Ruth hall. Tickets are$10 at the door.
