Chinchilla Netball finishes on a high
NETBALL: Chinchilla Netball has capped off a strong year with two grand final wins in Dalby over the weekend.
The first game saw Chinchilla's team of high-schoolers compete in the final of the intermediate A competition.
One Step Closer took a strong lead in the first quarter, and never looked back.
Goal attack Christina Jones never faltered under pressure and was supported with superb defence at the other end of the court by Arlie Sommerfeld.
The two ends were held together with exceptional mid court coverage by Kate O'Sullivan.
They were simply too good for the opposition and finished with a strong win.
Special mention must be made of young coach Sallie Sommerfeld for her awesome leadership of this team.
The second game of the day saw some of the younger girls fight it out in the final of junior A.
The Warriors battled some nerves in the first quarter with a number of the girls playing in only their first season of netball.
However, the pocket dynamo Emma Watson controlled her team from the centre of the court.
This was combined with a master move by rookie Coach Jessie Jakins to move her little sister Kobi into Goal Attack.
Kobi paired up with Ella Clarke in the shooting to circle to steer her team into the lead.
Briony Isles shut down the goal scoring at the other end with awesome defence.
The game was a nailbiter through to the end with the Warriors eventually taking only a two goal win.
The last game was always going to be the biggest challenge for the Chinchilla club with Firecrackers playing up a division in the intermediate B competition.
The hard-working little team held the opposition close for the entire first half, but just could not withstand the pressure of the older and more experienced opposition in the second half.
The Firecrackers however never gave up and goalkeeper Chloe Ellem encouraged her team to fight on right till the end.
While they didn't get the win this year, but the Firecrackers will definitely be a team to watch in the future.
Seven Chinchilla Netball teams competed in the Dalby PCYC competition throughout the year.
Three were Nippers teams, playing in either their first or second year of netball.
The Nippers game is a modified version of netball, with a focus on participation and having fun.
The club also had four teams competing in the competitive fixtures under standard netball rules.
A presentation and break up day was held on Sunday, where the major awards were presented for the season.
Junior player of the year was Kate O'Sullivan, senior player of the year went to Olivia Mutch and special thanks was given to junior co-ordinator Jodie Ellem, whose efforts ensured the 2016 Chinchilla Junior Netball season was a success.
