Child geniuses join new excellence academy
CHILD GENIUSES in the Mackay region will have a chance to accelerate their learning with a new program being rolled out at Mackay State High School.
The Academic Excellence Academy Program was put in place to foster Mackay's high academic achievers and give them an avenue to excel in their studies, more than they already do.
Mackay State High School principal Steve Paulger said the program was a great way to engage with bright students looking for something more out of their studies.
"We introduced the program for the first time last year and found it was hugely successful,” he said.
"We offer it to grades seven, eight and nine but we first introduced it to the year six students from primary schools in our catchment to come along two days a term and see what it's all about.
"We are open to any students outside of our catchment applying too.”
Students who take part in the program are given a taste of high school life, sitting in subjects like maths, english and science, agriculture, music and drama.
Once accepted the students carry out the same subjects as the rest of their grade but at an accelerated rate, giving them the chance to carry out extra curricular activities, studies and projects later in the year.
Grade nine student Jade Storey said the program has helped her feel prepared for senior school and choosing the right career path.
"It's really enjoyable, we have great teachers and it really helps us prepare for university and jobs later,” she said.
"I think I want to take up teaching myself after doing this, I feel a lot more confident with my studies too.”
Newly accepted year six student Teneale White said he was excited to start the program and seeing what high school was all about.
"I was offered to come along with all the other grade fives and just really enjoyed myself,” he said.
"I though it would be a great way to extend my learning and makes friends at the same time.”
The program will take place each year and carry students through until grade 10 before they split off into senior school.
