BELIEVE: Cher confirms she will appear at Mardi Gras

CHER has seemingly confirmed that she will be coming to Australia for the 2018 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

The 71-year-old singer tweeted to her 3.5 million followers.

While the tweet does not explicitly state she will be in Sydney for Mardi Gras, the rainbow emoticon appears to confirm earlier rumours that she would perform.

The 2018 Mardi Gras, set for Saturday March 3, will be the event's 40th anniversary.

It is unclear whether Cher will participate in the parade, or if she will be the headline performer at the after-party.

In an earlier Tweet, the star revealed that she was "hoping to do concerts in Australia and New Zealand in 2018. Will update".

It is not known at this stage if her Mardi Gras appearance will be as part of a larger tour.

Her last tour to Australia was in 2005.

Although Cher has performed at other gay events over the years - most recently at the Pier Dance following New York Pride in 2013 - she has never previously performed at Mardi Gras, despite rumours.

Many big name stars have appeared at the Mardi Gras party over the years.

Cindy Lauper performed in 2008, George Michael appeared in 2010, and Kylie and Dannii Minogue have both appeared three times: Kylie in 1994, 1998 and 2012; and Dannii in 1998, 1999 and 2015.

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has been contacted for a comment.
