NEW Zealand hip-hop artist Che Fu will kick off the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre's Live in the Lounge initiative this long weekend.

The bar area in the foyer will be transformed into Live in the Lounge, a trial run by the GECC to provide a relaxed atmosphere for the public.

With a dance floor, mood lighting, lounges, bar stools and tables and chairs marketing and media officer Julie White said the space would provide something different for Gladstone music fans.

"We've been thinking about it for a while and are excited to launch it this long weekend with such an established artist," she said.

"In the long term, we are looking at introducing all sorts of genres and themes."

Mrs White said there were no concrete plans to make Live in the Lounge a regular event but it had been welcomed by the community.

"There's been lots of interest in it so far," she said.

"There's been lots of Facebook activity floating around and we've had calls off the hook today.

"We've sold a few hundred tickets already."

Che Fu is considered a pioneer of hip-hop and Pasifika music in New Zealand.

A highly respected songwriter and producer and a founding member of the successful band Supergroove, Che Fu has sold thousands of albums in New Zealand and internationally as a solo artist.

He will perform all of his hits including Chains, Waka and Light Work.

He will be supported by DJ JTOK and DJ Huta at the event on Saturday, June 6.

Doors to the event open at 8pm and tickets will be available on the night for $30.

Live in the Lounge is an 18+ event.
