PLANS to give the Gympie Civic Centre a $500,000 refurbishment will likely be put on the backburner following news that billions of dollars in regional infrastructure funds remained uncertain under the Coalition's legislation to repeal the mining tax.

Deputy Mayor Tony Perrett said yesterday the Gympie Regional Council had been "granted" $350,000 from the $2 billion Regional Infrastructure Fund which the Federal Government has removed.

Though the council had been told it would receive the money, it had signed no contracts to undertake the work.

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss has labelled the former government's pledge a "cruel con".

"Hundreds of projects were announced that had not even received cursory departmental assessments, yet Labor was promising anyone who would listen that these were somehow a done deal," he said.

While Labor had originally allocated the funds to come from mining tax revenue, it had guaranteed the money would still be delivered despite the massive shortfall in revenue.

Details of which specific projects could lose out under the new government's decision not to fund mining tax-associated projects have not yet been released.

However, projects for which contracts have already been signed will still receive the funds promised.
