Community party celebrates new era

MARKET stalls and Mackay performers will all be part of the show when Mackay celebrates the opening of the new Forgan Bridge on August 14.

Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace and Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin said the Community Open Day would be a great way to celebrate the beginning of a new era for Mackay, bringing to a close $148 million worth of works.

“This new bridge is definitely a big deal. It has sustained 433 direct and indirect jobs over the three years it took to build and will now provide for a one-in-100 year flood,” Mr Wallace said.

“We know there’s been a lot of disruption to motorists while these important upgrades were rolled out around Mackay so we’re using this as a way to thank locals for all their patience,” he said.

There would be plenty for everyone at the open day, Mr Mulherin said.

“We’ll be putting on community food stalls, free entertainment for the kids, a car show and displays from the Department, contractors and subcontractors. This will all contribute to what’s sure to be an enjoyable day of family fun,” he said.

The party will run from 4pm to 9pm on the new Forgan Bridge in Mackay’s CBD. It will close the bridge and motorists are advised to use either Ron Camm or Edmund Casey bridges.

People interested in performing or holding a food or market stall at the open day should send expressions of interest to forganbridge@tmr.qld.gov.au.
