Cathy escapes into TV shows and she's not alone says survey

MACKAY people love their television and Cathy Vella is no exception.

For her, television is so much more than just a way to watch her favourite show.

Ms Vella uses her television as an escape from everyday life.

She said she would spend about four hours a day in her living room, escaping into a world of crime and reality TV shows.

A new Telstra survey has revealed 45% of regional Queensland employees tackle Mondayitis by talking about their favourite TV program with colleagues

Ms Vella said she enjoyed talking about her favourite shows with her family and friends.

"I usually watch most of my television at night," she said.

"My favourite shows are Dancing with the Stars and I also like Bones and Criminal Minds."

Ms Vella said television brought her family together at night and was an opportunity to get them all in the one place.

She laughed when asked if she would ever cancel other plans to watch an episode of her favourite TV show.

"Of course not. I would just ask my son to record it."

Watching television was still one of her favourite things to do but she said her viewing habits had changed a lot since she was a child.

"We used to watch a lot more as kids, I think...between cartoons and shows on the weekends and after school."

She said although she normally only watched free-to-air television, she enjoyed National Geographic and the Weather Channel on Foxtel.

Telstra Country Wide area general manager for North Queensland Rachel Cliffe said the research showed nothing got Mackay employees interacting more on a Monday morning than a little light-hearted banter about what was on the box.

"TV brings people together," Ms Cliffe said. "There's nothing more unifying than finding common ground with colleagues on your favourite show or the weekend's sports results."
