Carnival caps off interclub touch challenge

TWO North Burnett touch football teams have finished their interclub challenge by attending a carnival day in Maryborough earlier this month.

Throughout the past few months, Gayndah, Mundubbera and Biggenden teams played games in the Sunshine Coast, Fraser and Burnett District Touch Association’s interclub challenge, although only the first two teams were represented at the carnival on November 16.

Childers, Maryborough and two teams from Hervey Bay also competed.

Each team played three games at the carnival, continuing on from three games played previously.

Gayndah Touch Football Association president Stacey Duncan said they had a strong season, winning three games, drawing two and losing one.

“The games were played in different towns which gave players the opportunity to meet other players in clubs in our region,” Duncan said.

“The idea was put forward for the clubs to participate under their own accord in a round-style format.

“However, Maryborough hosted a combination of the last games in one afternoon to enable the competition to be completed before all clubs finalised their seasons for 2019.”

Duncan said Gayndah was looking forward to hosting the next interclub challenge in the first half of 2020.

Mundubbera was only able to rustle up four players — Connor Adams, Doug Kumar, and Melinda and Nicola Thorburn — for the carnival, and were supplemented by players from Maryborough.

Mundubbera Touch Football Association secretary Melinda Thorburn said, while they didn’t win a game on the day, they were very competitive.

“It was a great initiative of the SCFBDTA,” she said.

“We look forward to more opportunities like this in 2020.”

The finals of Gayndah’s touch football competition will be held next Friday night, while Mundubbera is still playing its semi-finals.
