Capras can't hold on
A SPELL of sloppy defence by the CQ Capras was all Norths needed to make a break and win a very good Intrust Super Cup clash at Browne Park yesterday.
Organisers wanted a good crowd at the televised match and they got that with plenty of bodies filling all the main covered stands.
If Channel Nine was looking for atmosphere, they won't be disappointed with spectators prepared to cheer on every good move from the home team and give the visiting Norths players an appropriate amount of verbal discouragement for their mistakes.
The Capras had first use of a tricky diagonal breeze but it is difficult to say whether it actually gave the home team any advantage.
Reece Goldsmith failed to drag in a pass 5m from the Norths line and the Capras were made to pay as Norths didn't even need to complete their set of six before a hole appeared around the ruck area and fullback Daniel Ogden took full advantage.
The reply from the Capras was quick and brilliant.
A run by fullback Reece Baker left Norths scrambling and even when they caught him, centre Russel Webber was in support to run 30m and score.
In a cut-and-thrust opening 40 minutes of football, neither team could gain an advantage, Kurt Baptiste putting the Norths team ahead and then a driving run from Capras captain Tim Glasby saw him make 15m to get over the line and level things up again.
The Capras moved into a 16-12 lead as Tyron Cranston scored the try of the match with a towering leap over his opposite number and clutching a high Gavin Duffy kick and then making the 8m to score.
Before the break Norths pressed forward with Baker making a try- saving tackle only to see Norths continue the move to the right from the play-the ball until Capras ran out of numbers, allowing Namila Davui to cross.
Tied up at 16-16 at the interval, the Capras started the second half well but then fell to a couple of sucker punches as five-eighth Angus Cameron sold a little dummy to create a hole and score and then shortly after ran the ball from halfway, going to his right and outpacing the opposition cover.
The Capras might get defeated but they don't fold and Josh Tanner gave the side hope, making it 28-20.
But when the defence around the ruck went missing again to let in Baptiste and shortly afterwards Jarrod Wallace in a similar position, it made Webber's late try just a consolation.
