LAST year at the 2011 Truck and Machinery show I was approached by a distraught young woman named Candice.
She proceeded to tell me that she could not find a training organisation that would help her get her truck licence.
From what I could tell from our early conversation she had the passion, energy and desire to gain a heavy vehicle truck licence to provide for her family.
We then started to discuss a pathway forward to organise some lessons for her to be able to attain her heavy rigid licence.
At this stage she proceeded to tell me the barriers which had stopped her reaching her goal.
For most Queenslanders these barriers might seem insignificant. But for a young mother who has a disability these hurdles seemed to be insurmountable.
Candice is hearing impaired.
As time went on she was able to work through these barriers and enrol into our heavy ridged licence upgrade course.
After significant effort she proceeded to gain her heavy rigid licence.
On March 26 she started her new life as Queensland's newest truck driver. A fantastic operator has given her a three-month trial.
We are proud of Candice's efforts to date and will keep you informed of her progress.
The skills shortage is upon us requiring a detailed plan to "Attract, Train, Place and Retain" the talent in your business.
Over the past few years we have trained more than 6000 people in the transport and logistics sector with 62% starting their career in transport and logistics.
To retain this talent we will require professional development on several levels, from licence upgrades to certificate three, four or diploma type qualification to retain your talent.
