Bootcamps to be booted by end of October after cost blowout

BOOT camps for troubled Queensland youth and juvenile offenders were introduced in August 2013.

Their introduction in Rockhampton followed community concern about out of control behaviour of a small group of juveniles.

The boot camps were also rolled out by the Newman government in Cairns, Townsville and the Fraser/Sunshine Coast, as part of a youth justice overhaul.

The Rockhampton and Fraser/Sunshine Coast camps focused on early intervention while courts sentenced young offenders to the Cairns and Townsville camps to divert them from detention and give them a chance to change their offending pattern.

By the end of October, the Palaszczuk government plans to shut down all of the boot camps following reports of a $16.7million cost blowout and that the boot camps don't break the cycle of repeat offenders.

The Palaszczuk government has allocated $23.6million to youth justice in this budget to bring back court referrals to youth justice conferencing.
