By-election announced as councillor quits

ISAAC Regional Council has announced the date for its by-election, after a councillor and former deputy mayor quit to focus on his family's booming organic beef business.

Councillor Dale Appleton resigned from the council on September 30, after nearly a decade of service.

He'll be building up his expanding business across seven properties: Bulliwallah, Yarmina, Beelarong, Craven, Islay Plains, Tango, and Star Downs.

Mr Appleton was elected as a Division 1 councillor in 2009 and served as Deputy Mayor from 2012 to 2016.

He's represented the region as a member of AgForce, Mistake Creek Progress Association, and the Clermont Saleyards Committee.

Candidate nominations opened on Friday for the Division 1 by-election, which is due to be held on November 18, according to the council's acting chief executive Rod Ferguson.

It will be conducted as a full postal vote.

Mr Ferguson said it was important residents and would-be candidates were aware of key dates put forward by the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ).

"Division 1 represents residents from as far east in Isaac to Turrawulla, Glenden, Hail Creek, Epsom to as far west as Belyando, Laglan, Elgin, Peak Vale and rural areas of Clermont,” he said.

"If you're not sure if you fall into Division 1, visit the ECQ website.”

Mr Ferguson reminded Isaac residents voting is compulsory and said they'll need to make sure their details are up to date for their vote to count.

Enrolling to vote or updating details can be done through the Australian Electoral Commission website.

The electoral roll closes on Friday, October 27 at 5pm, while candidate nominations close on Tuesday, October 31 at 12pm (noon).

Mr Ferguson encouraged those interested in candidacy to "visit the ECQ website for a great handbook for candidates for local government elections”.

"The role of a local government councillor is a rewarding one. It requires focus, time and energy in serving the best interests of their people and communities,” he said.

"And they have to be willing to learn about local government to achieve this.”
