Burnett-born Olympian impresses at titles
BEACH VOLLEYBALL: In the 2017 - 2018 beach volleyball season Taliqua Clancy and team mate Mariafe Artacho del Solar have won the most ever titles in a season by an Australian men's or women's team.
This achievement is made even more impressive as it is the first full season Clancy and Artacho have contested as a team.
The Australian duo capped off their successful season with a bronze medal at the FIVB World Tour Finals in Germany.
The pair started the event seeded in seventh and exceeded expectations by finishing at the top of their pool.
Finishing with a four to two record at the world tour finals, the Australians only setbacks were to second-seeded Barbora Hermannova and Marketa Slukova of Czech Republic in pool play Thursday and agaion against the Czech duo with a semi-final loss on Sunday morning two sets to one (13-21, 21-19, 17-15).
"It's bloody amazing. We've had some really tough matches and to come out on top in this tournament where we play the best in the world, it's such a special feeling,” Artacho said.
Artacho and Clancy posted a two sets to one (21-15, 19-21, 15-8) bronze medal win in 51 minutes over fourth-seeded Maria Antonelli and Carolina Salgado of Brazil to advance to their sixth FIVB World Tour podium this season in 12 events where the pair will split the $50,000 third-place prize.
"I'm so proud of what we've done and achieved,” said Clancy.
"We set out some goals of what we wanted to achieve this year and I think we've actually reached all of them.
Off the back of their world tour success and silver medal at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games the pair will now set their sights on preparing for the Olympics.
Clancy competed at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with Louise Bawden. while Artacho represented Australia alongside Nicole Laird.
"I think we've put ourselves in a good position to start the Olympic qualification,” Clancy said.
"We definitely want to be the best even though we're in our first season, we want to be consistent and take them momentum all the way to Tokyo.”
For the 2017-2018 FIVB campaign, Artacho and Clancy took four World Tour gold medals by reaching the top of the podium at events in China, Australia, Switzerland and Portugal.
As for season totals, Artacho and Clancy earned $133,500 for the third-best winnings effort by a women's Australian team.
The pair won 41 of 53 matches together to finish the season with an impressive 77.4 winning percentage.
Artacho is excited to see what they can achieve in their second season together as a team next year.
"We're a fresh team and I think we've done really good in our first season as a team and it's kind of a place of where we can keep going and where we can take our team,” said Artacho.
"We're really competitive and keep working hard and keep setting new goals.
"We can keep growing and take the team to another level.”
Brazil's Agatha Bednarczuk and Eduarda Lisboa claimed the gold medal at the world tour finals in two straight sets and 43 minutes over the Czech's to take home out a $150,000 cash prize, the largest winning purse in the history of beach volleyball.
