ATHLETICS: A strong contingent of students from the South Burnett will be looking to make their mark at the Queensland school sport state athletic championships.

In their final year of schooling Kingaroy State High School students Steven Wheeler and Ethan Schlutz will be representing Wide Bay for the first time for track and field.

The duo will be looking to transfer their speed from the soccer pitch onto the track in Brisbane when they line up for the 100m and 200m events.

Ethan's motivation to test his sprinting ability started because of a bet with his mates and now he has made the Wide Bay team he is looking forward to stepping up and taking on Queensland's best.

"There are a lot of really good kids like Matthew Otto that I have raced against and they are fairly high in Australia so it is good to race against them and see how they react,” he said.

Steven will also compete in the 400m, triple jump and long jump events as the South Burnett and Wide Bay 18-19 year-old age champion and is looking forward to the experience on and off the track.

"You meet new people and that is the best part, people with the same interests as you,” he said.

Kingaroy will also be represented by Gio Okesene in shot put, Abbey Kapernick in high jump and long jump and sisters Sophie and Mackenzie Grundy.

Sophie placed fourth in javelin at the championships last year and will be looking to go one better at the championships on October 25-28.

"I will be trying to get on the podium this year,” she said.

The school is proud to have a strong representation and Krysty Connelly from the school is looking forward to seeing what the students can achieve.

"We are extremely proud to get six kids in the Wide Bay team. They will do their best and represent the school and the district with pride,” she said.

Sophie will also race in the 400m event and Mackenzie will test herself in the 800m and 1500m races.

Nanango State High School will be strongly represented on the track with 10 students ready to race.

Harrison Weil, Matthew Rankin, Jake Keating, Jack Daly, Jericho Pogany, Summer Millard, Paige O'Connor, Zoe Larsen, Kirsten O'Connor and Bree Pogany will compete in various events from sprinting, triple jump, long distance running events and the 3000m walk.

Murgon Sate High School will be represented by Dominique Sandow, Mitchell Bond and Richard Bridges.

Dominique took out the U13 high jump at the Wide Bay trials and has been training hard with his father Dennis Sandow, who was himself represented Wide Bay for high jump in his school days.

Richard will compete in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and1500m events and will be looking to replicate his achievements from last year and again make the state team.
