Buderim cubs honoured with highest award
TWO Buderim boys have a shiny new badge to add to their already expansive repertoire of skills.
Guy Cunningham, 10, and Isaac McKinlay, 11, received their Grey Wolf Cub Scout Awards after completing tests of navigation, bush safety and survival.
The pair had to lead a two-hour long hike of their choosing to finally gain the award.
Guy said he chose to trek the Buderim tramway track because he felt a connection with the track as part of Buderim.
"I had to cater for and look after a group of five,” he said.
"You learn lots of new things you don't learn at school or home (doing cub scouts).
"I feel very proud of myself that I've achieved it.”
Isaac also opted for a hike close to home and led a trek through Buderim Forest Park.
"It's my favourite place to go walking,” he said.
"It's a great feeling (to receive the award) because I've been working towards it for so long and to finally complete it was a great feeling.”
Though both have now achieved the highest honour of their age groups in scouts, neither have plans of calling it quits.
Now they're of proper age, the duo have set their sights on the next level of achievement - the Scouts Queen Award.
"To get that, you have to do an overnight hike and 30kms all on your own,” Guy said.
While it's not something which appeals to every 10-year-old, Guy and Isaac agreed they loved the challenge which came with the cub scouts activities.
Guy's mother Hedley Cunningham said she felt the experiences also set the children up well for later in life.
"I think it's nice to do something non-competitive,” she said.
"There are so many skills you can learn, so you might know something and your friend will know something and together, you can achieve whatever it is you want to achieve.”
