GYMPIE is bang in the middle of two of the worst stretches of national highway in Queensland, according to the RACQ.
And the Bruce Hwy overall has been identified as the deadliest major road in Australia.
The Australian Road Assessment Program report, released yesterday, says the Bruce Hwy makes up about one-third of the national network in Queensland.
But it had about 50% of the network's casualty crashes and 61% of deaths between 2005 and 2009.
It makes up two-thirds of the top 15 most dangerous sections of national highway in Queensland.
And it accounts for one in six deaths on the entire national road network.
The AusRAP report is produced by the Australian Automobile Association, which said it scored medium-high to high risk along much of its length.
Commenting on the report, RACQ executive manager public policy Michael Roth said an alarming 37% of Queensland's national highways were found to have a high risk rating.
The report lists the 15 most dangerous sections of the national highway in Queensland, with Cooroy-to-Gympie and Gympie-to-Childers among them.
Mr Roth said 'significant investment' was required "for infrastructure improvements to address safety deficiencies and to cater for increasing traffic demand on this major route for motorists and freight."
He said greater investment was required across the entire national road network in Queensland to bring roads to an acceptable safety standard.
"More federal government funding channelled into the upgrade and maintenance of our roads over the next 10 years would significantly reduce the road toll.
"The government needs to spend an additional billion dollars over 10 years - $100 million a year - solely on safety measures," he said.
Queensland Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said the report showed "how vital the Bligh Government's Bruce Hwy upgrade strategy is to getting the job done.
"The Bruce Hwy is federally funded, but only Labor has a plan to get the funds."
