Brough to sue over 'bribe' claim

FORMER Howard government minister Mal Brough says he will sue mayoral candidate Michael Bloyce for defamation over allegations that he offered him a bribe.

Mr Brough called a media conference at Alexandra Headland this morning to announce that he had contacted lawyers about Mr Bloyce's comments.

Mr Bloyce has claimed that Mr Brough told him that backers of another mayoral candidate, Mark Jamieson, would direct money towards him if he dropped out of the mayoral race and ran for a division instead.

Mr Brough told reporters that claims he had been offered Mr Bloyce a bribe were baseless.

He said he had been disturbed by the allegations, which had come as "quite a shock."

Mr Brough's lawyers have written a letter to Mr Bloyce demanding he apologise for his statements and pay compensation within 28 days or he will commence legal proceedings.

Mr Brough said it was the first time in his 17 year political career that he had taken legal action against anyone.

He said he had today been to see police who advised him that no complaint had been lodged with them.

Mr Bloyce told the Daily this week he believed the matter should be before voters before they decided who they should support.

Mr Bloyce is a former campaign manager for Peter Slipper while Mr Brough is expected to seek pre-selection for the seat of Fisher.

Mr Bloyce has blamed Mr Jamieson for TV ads linking him to Mr Slipper - a claim Mr Jamieson has denied.

Meanwhile,   local division 6 councillor Christian Dickson, who was last month elected unopposed for the area of Buderim, Mountain Creek and Sippy Downs, today announces his support for Mr Bloyce.

Cr Dickson has been surprised at the high volume of phone calls and emails asking who he is endorsing for mayor of the Sunshine Coast.

Cr Dickson said he was surprised at the large number of locals still unsure of who to vote for given the long and arduous campaign that has recently turned ugly.

While Cr Dickson said he had the utmost respect for all mayoral contenders, he believed that the recent dirt campaign on Michael Bloyce was nothing but a cowardly attempt to brand  Mr. Bloyce "guilty by association".

Cr Dickson, the son of local LNP State Member Steve Dickson, said he had known Michael Bloyce since early 2006 and was always impressed with the way he conducted himself as a person.

He said he has worked with Mr Bloyce on council and always found his professional advice and understanding of council matters to be second to none.

Cr Dickson said he believes that Mr Bloyce has the experience as a previous council manager to cut red tape and ensure that the organisation met the needs of local residents and their councillor representatives.
