Broken bridge leave locals stranded

A SPATE of vandalism attacks on the walk bridge at Woolgoolga Lake has resulted in it's closure, leaving locals and visitors highly inconvenienced.

The bridge is part of the Woolgoolga Lake Bikeway and provided the residents of Melaleuca Ave and walkers a easy access point to Woolgoolga Beach and the village centre via Lake Rd.

They will now have to make 3km detour via Solitary Islands Way, Market and Beach Streets to access Woolgoolga Beach or village centre.

The first vandalism attack occurred a fortnight ago and the latest incident took place over the long weekend of October 3, where vandals tore down sections of the bridge railing.

Coffs Harbour City Council have since erected metal barricades to block off the bridge to help prevent any more vandalism attacks.

Prior to the metal barricades, council had installed an orange plastic meshing over the initial vandalised area.

Resident, Tony Innes says it's a 'band aid fix' and urges the council to promptly repair and revamp the bridge which has been in disarray for years.

"Residents want to know what the council is going to do about it," he said.

Tony said the bridge was frequently used by a diversity of people ,from the vision impaired to visitors, and needs to be fixed before the Christmas holiday period.

"It's coming up to Christmas, there are big, popular holiday rentals over there, it'd be good to have it fixed by then," he said.

In a statement, Coffs Harbour City Council said new timber has been ordered which is expected to be delivered in early November with the repairs estimated to take two days.

Council have asked to report any vandalism attacks by calling 6648 4000.
