TOOWOOMBA is the first stop on the legendary Sir Tony Robinson's Tour of Duty, which airs tonight on Foxtel's History channel.

The brand new series, featuring 10, 60-minute segments follows Sir Tony's travels through Australia and New Zealand, as he meets the relatives and friends of those who fought in the First World War.

Best known for his role as Baldrick on the cult British comedy series Blackadder, the actor, comedian, historian and television host visited Toowoomba in May last year to film the documentary.

MORE ON THIS STORY

The crew stopped at the Toowoomba railway station and the Mothers' Memorial, where people were invited to watch the filming and bring in their war-time relics.

He said Toowoomba was brimming with history.

"Toowoomba's got some really great war stories, and apart from anything else, it's less well known.

"We wanted to go to some of those less well known towns as well as the Sydneys and Melbournes of the world."

The first part of each episode follows Sir Tony as he explores each new town and the second half features the Tour of Duty roadshow, a community event where locals come together to share their family's stories of wartime, show off some jaw-dropping memorabilia and tell the audience what Australia going to war means to them in the 21st century.

The series is part Foxtel's program in the lead-up to the pinnacle of the Centenary of Service commemorations this Anzac Day.
