Breakthrough win has cats' season back on track

AUSTRALIAN RULES: With the final siren already sounded, a Pomona player steadies himself.

He knows if he kicks the goal his team wins, leaving the Cats reeling and wondering what could have been.

Even though it is just a fixture, with not a lot at stake, he knows that every point counts.

As he starts his run up, things look shaky but the ball could still be a chance of sailing through for a major.

As the Sherrin spins through the air, it ever so gradually deviates from its original course.

The ball lands out of bounds with out registering the six points needed for the win and consequently hands Gympie their first win of the 2017 season.

The 48-46 score line was obviously tight and while coach Glenn Warren was relieved with the win, he knows the pressure is now on to back it up.

"We still went into the game confident,” Warren said.

"We have not been far away from a win but in saying that, our skills were dreadful today.

"We were missing targets and our forward line entry was pretty ordinary.

"Our defence was good again but our work rate around the ground still needs to lift.

"But I told the boys at quarter time to keep doing the little things right and things will start to go our way.”

The Cats now have a two week hiatus, with the representative round this week, before a bye the week after.

The women's match however was a different affair with the Cats beaten convincingly 46-19 by competition heavy weights Aspley.
