Grass fire flares up along Bruce Highway

UPDATE 1.40PM: A GRASS fire near Bloomsbury has been contained. 

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman confirmed the fire was extinguished about 12.30pm. 

She said one crew remained on site ensuring the scene is safe. 

BREAKING 12.30PM: RURAL Fire Queensland crews are battling a grass fire north of Mackay. 

The vegetation fire flared up along the Bruce Highway about 1km south of the Bloomsbury township at 11.40am. 

Reports indicate police are monitoring smoke, which may cause a hazard to motorists on the highway. 

Residents in the area should close their doors and windows and keep medication close by if suffering from a respiratory condition. 

Motorists should use caution and drive to the conditions.
