’BRB, I’m driving’, so make sure it’s on DND to be AOK
IT’S a simple enough action, turning your phone to do not disturb.
But it’s enough to save lives … and $1000.
That’s the message Roma police are hoping young drivers will pick up, as they ask Year 11 and 12 drivers to sign a pledge to not be disturbed while driving.
Senior Constable Dale Kenna has led the charge, asking new drivers at Roma State College to pledge their commitment to driving safely.
“They pledge to never text or talk on the phone while driving, and to set up the do not disturb function as soon as they get in the car,” he said.
“We want them to put their phone in the glovebox so they won’t get any notifications and distractions.”
In 12 months, police will review their driving history and if all is well, send them on their way with a good driving certificate.
“For our younger drivers especially, there are very specific rules about their use of mobile phones while driving,” Snr Const Kenna said.
“But all drivers should be aware of the rules around using a mobile phone while driving.
“We’re hoping to build good habits in our young drivers and hopefully they avoid a $1000 fine and losing four points.”
