Booyal Crossing work to achieve better reliability
THE impending installation of several barrels of new larger box culverts at the Booyal Crossing on the Burnett River will significantly improve water flow and address the current regularity of flooding at the crossing.
The Bundaberg Regional Council's Roads and Drainage spokesman Cr Tony Ricciardi said the crossing was severely impacted in the 2010/11 and 2013 flood events.
"Due to its low construction profile the crossing regularly suffers periods of inundation and this often happens when commercial and environmental flows are being released from Paradise Dam or minor rainfall events are experienced.
"The area is an important traffic route for many locals and regularly attracts campers due to the availability of campsites and the picturesque nature of the area."
Cr Ricciardi said the project is estimated to cost around $1.5 million with Council, Sunwater and the State and Federal Governments jointly involved in funding.
"Technical examination of the river flows at the crossing show that inundation can occur when flows reach 600 megalitres per day. The new pipework will allow flows of around 1300 megalitres per day and the crossing should remain trafficable even with flows of up to 1950 megalitres per day."
"This project represents the last of the betterment funded flood recovery works to be undertaken across the region and it means locals will get increased reliability at the crossing.
Cr Ricciardi said the existing concrete causeway and batters will be replaced at the height and width (4.2m) of the original structure.
Tenders for the project are expected to be let shortly after Easter with the work anticipated to be completed by late June or early July.
During the construction process the Burnett River crossing at this location will be closed.
