Boat carrying vietnamese refugees stopped

A BOAT carrying at least 33 Vietnamese asylum seekers was caught by Indonesian authorities after running aground in rough seas en-route to Australia.

They were stranded on the island nation three days ago, leading police on a three-day search before they could be detained.

The local immigration officer reported on Saturday, the 33 were sent to an overcrowded detention centre in Kupang - about 800km north-west of Darwin by sea.

Indonesia is a popular launching point for Australia-bound asylum seekers.
