Bird lovers land on Coffs Coast

PUT down the binoculars - there's some good news for bird watchers.

Australia's biggest bird conservation organisation has landed on the Coffs Coast.

Created by the merger of Birds Australia and Bird Observation & Conservation Australia, the new organisation claims to represent everyone who cares about Australia's native birds.

"This is an exciting time for us," BirdLife Australia's Chief Executive Dr Graeme Hamilton said.

"With a bigger network of dedicated people we can be more effective champions for bird conservation and better representatives of the interests of bird lovers."

The northern NSW branch of BirdLife Australia is currently gearing up for September's Congress & Campout.

"It's a really exciting time, it gives us a whole lot of opportunities to get together and do a lot more," NSW branch convener Peter Higgins said.

"The Campout is really informal, and open to anyone, and the conference will deal with a really wide range of topics."

To be held in Urunga, the campout offers visiting and local birdwatchers a great opportunity to learn more about birds and the conservation issues they confront.
