Big tick for tourism at Cania Gorge

TOURIST hotstpot Cania Gorge National Park was packed with families enjoying one of the North Burnett's hidden gems this Easter.

And it wasn't just the caravan parks that were full.

Cania Dam is sitting at a healthy 99 per cent capacity thanks to the consistent rainfall in recent weeks.

The picturesque sandstone cliffs of Cania Gorge were carved over hundreds of millions of years and the park boasts some of Queensland's most spectacular unspoiled landscape.

Management at the holiday parks had their work cut out during the busiest weekend of the year and praised the well-behaved visitors.

An exhausted Marie Haupt of Cania Gorge Tourist Retreat said they enjoy putting on an Easter egg hunt for the kids.

"We've had a really great group in,” Mrs Haupt said.

"Easter has always been a busy time for us. People come from all over, there's some here from Perth this year.”

The wet weather did nothing to deter the crowd at Jill Rankin's BIG4 Holiday Park which was fully-booked.

"This is our busiest time of year. Everyone has been having a good time,” Mrs Rankin said.

"There has been a few showers around but it hasn't interrupted anyone skiing or walking and it's been much cooler.

"We have outdoor movies every night during the school holidays and there's so much to do during the day.”

The Central & North Burnett Times headed to Cania over the Easter long weekend to find out what the tourists had to say.

Barry, 71, and Faye, 70 (Brisbane)

"It's our first time to Cania. We're having a family get together and spending time with our grandchildren. It's far enough out of Brisbane that we feel we're getting away into nature. We've had a a wonderful time, it's a beautiful place. The walks are absolutely amazing - it's really interesting that there is still aboriginal art in the caves.”

Carmiela and Brock (Brisbane)

"We've been hanging out and doing some bush walking. We like the facilities at the camp ground - the water park and jumping castle are great for the kids.”

Jeffery, 46, and Melissa, 28 (Bundaberg)

"I think we've only missed one Easter at Cania in the last couple of years. We love everything about it - the bush, fishing and walking. Ashton likes it here too, he doesn't want to go home. I normally catch some fish, but didn't get any this year.”

"It's a pretty laid back and cruisy place. There's good fishing and it's great for families. The kids have been riding their bikes and having fun at the park.”

Aleiah, 37, and Karen, 59 (Mackay)

"We have family that come from the Gold Coast to the south and Clermont to the west so we meet in the middle. It's an ideal spot for families, it has a little bit of everything. We caught a heap of red claw this morning.”
