Big Falls gig for Little May

SYDNEY indie pop band Little May will perform at Falls Festival for the first time this year, but they're no strangers to the North Byron Parklands venue, or the festival in general.

Band member Annie Hamilton has attended the festival's Lorne, Victoria, branch twice as a punter.

This year, the three-piece is looking forward to putting on their musician's hats at the festival's three sites, in Byron Bay, Lorne and Marion Bay, Tasmania.

"It's such a great festival and it's great to be a part of it," Hamilton said.

"It's just always got a very strong line-up.

"I went to Lorne and the band was definitely in existence then but we were still playing cover gigs in pubs."

Now, she looks forward to taking to the Falls Fest stages for the first time, and returning to the site where they performed for Splendour in the Grass last year.

"That was amazing so it will be nice to be back for New Year's," Hamilton said.

"It's one of the best festivals so I'm really looking forward to it."

Little May were a little-known outfit just 18 months ago, and Hamilton said it still felt "surreal" to see their hard work pay off.

"It's been crazy, even though we feel like we've been working really hard at it for a while," she said.

In April and May this year, Little May recorded their debut album, For the Company, in upstate New York and Brooklyn with producer Aaron Brooking Dessner.

She said after writing a list of producers they'd like to work with, the band found Dessner, a member of acclaimed rock band The National, at the top of their list.

But they didn't expect him to respond to their manager's request.

"None of us actually expected that at all," Hamilton said.

"When we got that response ... we were a bit star-struck at first."

Hamilton said working with Dessner helped them to achieve the album they were after.

"He's such a lovely guy and so generous with his time and he's a creative genius," she said.

Falls Festival will come to North Byron Parklands, Yelgun, from December 31 to January 3.
