Bennett wants a cure for Kane
BENNETT Mitchelhill was seriously worried about his friend Kane McPherson when he didn't show up at school for weeks.
Desperate to know what was going on, Bennett went looking for answers.
"I was getting worried after a few weeks so I decided to look into it," Bennett said.
"It turns out he was diagnosed with stage four anaplastic lymphoma."
Needing to help his friend, Bennett sprung into action.
"I was shocked and just immediately started thinking of ways I could help him," the 12-year-old said.
Kane and Bennett first met at St Mary's Primary School, but lost touch after Bennett moved away. But now, with both boys attending McAuley Catholic College, they had the chance to become friends again.
For the last few months, Kane has been undergoing chemo therapy at Brisbane's Lady Cilento Children's Hospital to treat the rare form of cancer.
To help raise more money, Bennett applied for a grant with McDonald's.
"My mum brought home a brochure about the grant and I thought I could use that for Kane," he said.
"A month later I got an email from McDonald's saying that I won the grant and I used that money to print raffle tickets for the fundraiser."
Bennett has been tirelessly selling raffle tickets every Wednesday night for the last few weeks in preparation for drawing the raffle on Sunday this week.
Bennett has plans to visit Kane in hospital soon to help deliver the money they raised.
He has a goal of $5000, but Bennett needs your help to get there.
"That's as much money we can raise with our raffle tickets," he said.
Raffle tickets are available at Clarence Valley Dental, DiMattia Hair, Twisted Scissors, Andrew Weatherstone Physiotherapy, Notaras timber mill, Wednesday's at the Wooli Pub and at the Goanna Pulling on Sunday.
