Surat Bowls Club dear to bartender Barry Kirstenfeldt

IF YOU have ever had a drink at the Surat Bowls Club in the past decade, there's a strong chance local legend Barry Kirstenfeldt poured it for you.

The 69-year-old former truck driver and farmhand will enjoy a well-earned day away from the bar this weekend for the Surat Bowls Carnival.

But Barry admitted he loved coming to open the bar every day to serve his mates a drink, even if he's not paid a cent for it.

"Everything we do for the club is voluntary - we just love the club," he said.

"I've been with the club for 28 years and a lot of people love coming here to eat and drink."

While he normally only opens the bar for a few hours each day, Friday nights can see him working until 10pm.

"We sell between 40 and 50 meals on a Friday night," Barry said.

But he said there wasn't any other place he'd rather be.

"A lot of people come here because there aren't many places to go to in Surat," Barry said.

Despite having poured thousands of beers in his time, Barry said he doesn't drink, preferring to have a Diet Coke instead.
