Ballina hockey teams have a real chance

BALLINA has the chance for dual A-grade hockey premierships today when they take on Northern Star in the men's grand final and Glee in the women's decider at Hepburn Park, Goonellabah.

But it won't be easy for the seasiders, with Star looking for a seventh major premiership in nine years and the Glee women going for an incredible 15th in a row.

The A-grade men hit off at 4.20pm and it should be a great game.

Both sides are intact and fit.

Ballina's win over Coraki in the preliminary final last Saturday was all guts and determination, especially the brilliance of veteran goalkeeper Peter Ryan.

His efforts undoubtedly have kept Coraki on the sidelines this week.

In comparison, Star's 7-2 win over Coraki the week before was built on outstanding teamwork and cohesiveness.

A repeat of that form would make it very tough for Ballina.

Mark Harris scored a hat-trick of goals and his ability to break away from defence and make space in the attacking 23 and goal circle is second to none.

His goal shooting is hard, fast and accurate and if he gets a shot on then there will be a reward, either a score or a corner.

Thomas Vantaggiato, a regular goal scorer, floats around high in attack and menaces the defence, keeping the opposition in two minds - Harris or him?

At the other end Dave Harmon and Ryan McGuiness appear to be impenetrable in defence for Star.

Ballina has plenty to respond with and over the season has developed the ability to close up shop and make all aspects of the game challenging for the opposition.

Grant Smith was quiet last week but remains crafty and he could well be saving himself for this game.

Scott Hamilton will build play for his younger counterparts in JJ Parker and Jarred and Tyler Arundel, while Brett Crawford and Josh Garrett will head up the defence.

Adam Byrne had a good game in the preliminary final and his linking from defence, midfield to high strikers was a feature for Ballina.

Glee will aim for its 15th straight premiership in the A-grade women's grand final starting at 2.30pm.

Ballina has teams in the grand finals in all four men's divisions and all four women's divisions - an outstanding achievement.
