Bald Eagles shine with Charters Towers victory

AUSSIE RULES: The Whitsunday Bald Eagles have returned from Charters Towers with the inaugural Gold City Cup in hand.

The team, traditionally comprised of retired footballers, travelled with just one player over 50 on the weekend.

Whitsunday contested the over-35 division and was victorious, winning both their outings.

"In our first game we came from five goals down against the Charters Towers Grim Reapers and with a spirited second half we overcame them by 17 points," club president Jack Lumby said.

"In our second game against the Townsville Sharks it was a hard and physical game.

"We were down three goals coming into the final period and through true grit and the will to win we were able to overcome our arch-rivals and win in such a close encounter.

"With scores level the final kick of the day by Jamie Fuhrmann sailed through the goals as the final siren rang out."

As well as getting the Bald Eagles' name on the inaugural trophy, Whitsunday's John Ryan was named player of the carnival while players' player went to Torren Credaro.

The Baldies also wore a black armband in support of long-time member Sandy Barille, who lost her son Greg last week.
