Backbone needed to get serious lift in the polls

KEITH Whiteside has called on the Prime Minister to lift his game (Daily, March 27).

However it wasn't just about the 30 Newspoll losses which prompted Malcolm Turnbull to oust Tony Abbott.

At the time Mr Turnbull said "... It is clear that the people have made up their mind about Mr Abbott's leadership ... We need advocacy, not slogans. We need a style of leadership that explains those challenges and opportunities, explains the challenges and how to seize the opportunities, a style of leadership that respects the people's intelligence...".

There was a collective sigh of relief that Mr Turnbull would be different to his predecessor with his sloganeering and adversarial pugilistic style.

Instead he has disappointed us as he back pedalled on many of his positions and ideas which had made him popular across the political divide - his support for a republic; his support for same-sex marriage; his belief in real action on climate change and supposedly embracing new innovative technologies to ensure our place in the digital future but now delivering a second-rate NBN.

We have had plenty of "malsplaining" - long on rhetoric, mantras and waffle with selfies galore. Mr Turnbull doesn't need "focus groups" as Keith suggests, he needs the courage of his convictions and the backbone to be the leader he aspired to be.

Maybe then he will get a lift in the polls and respect as a Prime Minister.
