Back peddling leaves storm damaged Moranbah club in lurch
SPORTS Minister Mick De Brenni has promised to fast track funding for a Moranbah sports club after the $150,000 it was promised by a Labor state election candidate failed to arrive.
The Moranbah BMX Club will be out of action for at least two weeks after a violent storm broke "almost every tree” at the grounds and destroyed the track.
Vice-president Phill Rivers said the club would have to do this out of its own pocket because the $150,000 due in their account in November turned into an election promise without a delivery date.
During the recent State Government election, Labor candidate for the seat of Burdekin Mike Brunker announced in front of an excited crowd that the Moranbah BMX Club would be receiving funding from the State Government to fix drainage and lighting at the track.
Mr Rivers said the club had understood the funding was not an election promise, and that the $150,000 would be accessible shortly after the announcement, but a week later they were told by "somebody from Brisbane” that the money would happen only if Labor was elected.
Mr Brunker admitted there had been a mix-up and said the club was notified when it became clear the funding had become an election promise.
"We did give them the impression that it was money that was there, but we explained to them once we got the word, that we had to wait for the election process,” he said.
Mr de Brenni yesterday said he would do "everything possible” to help the club.
"I'm going to do everything possible to get the club back on its feet, and I've asked my department to have an officer from Sport and Recreation Services contact the club and arrange to inspect the damage,” he said
"I will also do everything I can to ensure the $150,000 committed to the Moranbah BMX Club by the Labor candidate will be fast tracked and delivered in a timely manner.”
