Babies hit the gym early - from just two months old

A LITTLE gym has opened for the youngest of Sunshine Coast fitness fanatics.

Buderim gymnastic centre Fit Kids launched its new Baby Gym for infants two months and older this month.

The new gym is for parents to learn skills in developing their baby's motor neuron abilities, essentially keeping their child one step ahead of the rest.

Fit Kids owner and Baby Gym instructor Christina Sweeney said more than a dozen parents had registered their baby for the class.

"I have seen many children who had small development and movement problems through many years working as a competitive gymnastics teacher," Mrs Sweeney said.

"I started to look into ways of helping these children from a younger age and discovered that the best time was from two months.

"The simple exercises we do promote pathways for future learning and reinforce a baby's abilities."

The rhythmic movement training adopts simple techniques to strengthen a baby's coordination, balance and sensory skills.

Parents get taught to use tools such as bubble catchers for hand and eye coordination, rattles for strengthening the senses and mats for encouraging tummy time.

Mrs Sweeney said the class enabled busy parents time to teach their child basic skills for life.

"I have really seen a great improvement in these babies since joining the gym," she said.

"They find it enjoyable and they are developing skills they may not have learned until much later."
