EASTER time is synonymous with chocolate - Easter eggs and other treats are given out at staff meetings, birthday parties, supermarkets, attached to magazines and packed into school lunch boxes.

For those watching their weight, Easter can be a nightmare. But, according to dietician Nicola Moore, there is an easy solution to enjoying the festivities and avoiding weight gain.

Easter eggs are high in both fat and sugar - making them a double whammy when it comes to calorie and kilojoule counts. A tiny Cadbury solid mini egg has 39 calories and 163 kilojoules - this would take six minutes of walking and four minutes of running to burn off (see table below).

"Its simple - if you do the crime you must do the time. One needs to decide if eating an egg of that size in a few seconds is worth the minutes of exercise needed to use up that energy."

Moore says it is also important to refrain from substituting chocolate eggs for meals.

If the volume of food is decreased a person could easily be tempted to increase their intake of eggs to get that same full feeling. Moore suggests decreasing one's calorie intake during the day to balance out the extra calories in the eggs. For example, leave sugar out of tea or coffee, don't use margarine, don't use oil, and don't drink soft-drink.

She also warns against the temptation of overeating.

"There is a type of person who eats on-the-go, multi-tasking, not really aware of or appreciating what they're eating. The best way to fight this is for the person to stop, sit down and take the time to enjoy the food they are eating. This will increase one's ability to refrain from eating more and more."
