Australian woman, 73, sentenced to death in Vietnam

A 73-YEAR-OLD Australian woman has been sentenced to death in Vietnam for trafficking heroin in bars of soap. Vietnamese-born Australian Nguyen Thi Huong was found guilty of possessing 2.8kg of the drug as she boarded a plane to Sydney in 2014.

"We are concerned that an Australian citizen has been sentenced to death in Vietnam," the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement.

"We will continue to provide consular assistance and support to the woman and her family."

Huong told the court she was given the 36 bars of soap as a gift and was unaware it contained heroin.
