Australian facing death penalty in Indonesia
AN AUSTRALIAN Federal Police deal to help in a Jakarta murder investigation, in return for an assurance the death penalty would not be sought, might have backfired.
The ABC quoted a Jakarta judge yesterday saying it would be up to the court whether a death sentence was handed down in the case of permanent Australian resident Jessica Wongso.
Ms Wongso is accused of murdering a friend by lacing her coffee with cyanide.
Justice Minister Michael Keenan's office said the Indonesian government had given written assurance the death penalty would not be sought.
