Australian duo crowned champions

BEACH VOLLEYBALL: Kingaroy beach volleyball player Taliqua Clancy has won the 2018 Asian beach volleyball championships in Thailand alongside team mate Mariafe Artacho Del Solar.

The Australian duo faced fierce competition from China's Wang Fan and Xue Chen in the gold medal match.

The Australian's took the first set 21-17 then Chinese won the second 19-21 before Clancy and Artacho Del Solar claimed the third set 15-9 to secure the championship.

Clancy said they were proud to bring the championship home.

"I am very excited and very happy to win this tournament. It is a very important event,” she said.

"China are a very tough team. We like playing them because we know we have to bring out our best to beat them.”

The Australians were undefeated at the Championshps.

The duo won their three pool games in straight sets over Malaysia, Thailand and Japan.

They won their quarter final in straight sets over Japan 21-13 and 21-13.

They advanced to the gold medal match on the back of their two set win over a different Japanese outfit 21-14 and 21-19.

The podium was rounded out by Japanese duo Miki Ishii and Megumi Murakami who defeated the Chinese pairing of Wang Xin Xin and Xia Xinyi 18-21, 21-10 and 15-11 in the bronze medal match.

The players faced challenging conditions on the beach.

"The condition here is quite tough for us. It was quite windy, so we could not control the ball well in the second set. Fortunately, it did not affect much in the third set,” Clancy said.

Clancy is a back-to-back Asian champion having won the title in 2017 with former team mate Louise Bawden in straight sets over China.

"We (Australia) have been the Asian champions, so I am very proud of what we have achieved,” Taliqua said.

The Australian duo will return to the court for a four star tournament in China in coming weeks as they build towards qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
