Australia Zoo roars into a solar-powered future

MORE than 1800 solar panels will be installed at Australia Zoo in a move that will reduce emissions by 16,500 tonnes over 25 years.

GEM Energy will develop the 648-kilowatt solar power plant that will be designed to accommodate the zoo's complex energy needs.

Australia Zoo director Wes Mannion said the investment would in the long-term allow more resources to go towards conservation.

"We're contributing to the reduction of emissions in our own environment, and we're also saving a substantial amount on electricity long term,” he said.

GEM Energy national sales manager Aaron Hilton said it was an honour to help the zoo operate more efficiently.

Construction of the power plant started yesterday.
