Australia two down at lunch

AUSTRALIA has lost two wickets for 68 runs in the opening session on the first day of the Boxing Day test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Openers Dave Warner (37) and debutant Ed Cowan (14no) strode out to the middle after Australian captain Michael Clarke won the toss and elected to bat.

Warner was quick out of the blocks, hammering four boundaries and one six, while Cowan was happy enough to patiently wait for his runs.

However, the grey clouds which had hung over the MCG since the start of play, finally opened up and the players were forced off the ground.

But despite the absence of play being short lived, the break was enough for the Indians to regather and hit-back with the wicket of Warner.

The swashbuckling opener tried to hook a rising Umesh Yadav (2/25) ball, but only managed to nudge it high and into the gloves of MS Dhoni.

And the Australians were quickly two down when Shaun Marsh (0) slashed at Yadav and gave Virat Kohli a regulation catch.

Lunch was called due to the return of the rain and play has yet to resume.
