Aussies have the Italians licked

IT'S the burning question at the tip of everyone's tongue.

Who does gelato better: Italians or Aussies?

It's serious business at Gelatissimo at Mooloolaba to see which country can claim the glory of best Christmas flavour this holiday season.

The franchise is selling two new flavours in the spirit of the season, a Christmas Pudding flavour and a Panettone (Italian Christmas Cake) flavour.

True blue Aussie teens Abbey John and Tayla Revell, both of Caboolture, sampled both and voted in favour of Christmas pudding.

"We have a pudding every Christmas, it tastes just like it," Abbey said.

Tayla said, "The Panettone grew on me, but I liked the Christmas Pudding straight away.

"It reminded me of gingerbread."

Gelatissimo Mooloolaba owner Kathy Blake said both flavours started off as equals.

"In the beginning there was no clear favourite, but the closer we've come to the 25th, the Aussie Christmas Pudding has emerged as the winner as people get more into the season," Ms Blake said.

"I have to admit I prefer Christmas Pudding as well."

Not everyone has been willing to steer from their usual store favourites though.

"We have two types of customers. Those who never sway from their usual choice, and others who rotate through all the flavours in store," Ms Blake said.

"We've seen a lot of couples get both Christmas flavours to share between them."

Seasonal flavours are nothing new for Gelatissimo.

The next will come in January to celebrate Australia Day.

"In the past we had Vegemite and everyone loved that," Ms Blake said.

The Christmas Pudding and Panettone flavours are in store until January 1.

Gelatissimo is running a Facebook competition to gauge the popularity of the two flavours with either a cake or hamper up for grabs.
