THE Australian team of Anna Meares and Kaarie McCulloch has taken bronze in a dramatic women's team sprint at the London Olympics.
The Australian duo out-sprinted the Ukrainian pair with a time of 32.727 to claim third in the first event at the velodrome.
But it was in the gold medal race where the drama unfolded, as the Chinese duo of Jinjie Gong and Shuang Guo, the world record holders, fell foul of the umpires and were disqualified to second place.
The Chinese pair had beaten the German pair Miriam Welte and Kristina Vogel on the track, but due to the Chinese pair's mishap, the Germans were lifted to the top of the medal dais.
The Chinese pair suffered the same fate as the hometown favourites of Jessica Varnish and Victoria Pendleton, who were disqualified earlier in the event.
Meanwhile, the Australian men's team sprint outside the medal positions, finishing fourth after losing the bronze medal race against Germany.
Great Britain won the gold in a world record time of 42.600, pushing the French team to the silver position.
