Asylum seeker boat receives help

A BOAT, carrying Indonesians hoping to come to Australia, was taking on water and waiting for help from the nation's search and rescue service on Thursday afternoon.

The ABC reported on Thursday that its Indonesia correspondent George Roberts was contacted by people on a boat that was taking on water near the island of Madura.

Understood to be carrying about 60 people, the boat rang Mr Roberts seeking help from Australian authorities as the boat was taking on water after its engine failed.

But as the boat was still in Indonesian waters, he reported it to the nation's search and rescue group, Basarnas.

A Basarnas statement released on Thursday afternoon said the agency had deployed a search and rescue team, but it had not yet found the boat.
