Astronomers watch 100 year treat

AMATEUR astronomers or those simply intrigued by the universe braved the chilly morning today to see Jupiter lining up with Venus, Mercury and Mars.

The visual treat, not seen for about 100 years was visible just above the horizon around sunrise today.

Clear skies provided those brave enough to get out of bed with an excellent view of the four planets.

The alignment only happens once every 50 to 100 years, and very rarely on Friday the 13th.

Local amateur astronomer Anthony Gibbons was up in the cool weather to capture a glimpse of the planets and take some incredible photos.

“It was very cold but a very nice morning,” Mr Gibbons said.

“The formation should stay around for a couple of weeks as the planets slowly move apart, so people can get up and have a look for themselves,” he said.
